The origin of this firm goes back to 1867 when Henri Nestle developed a milk-based infant food and started selling it through his firm, the Société Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé. In 1868, Daniel Peter tried to perfect the manufacturing process of milk chocolate for several years till he came in contact with Henri Nestle, who showed him how to extract all the moisture from the milk chocolate to prevent the formation of mildew. Eight years after his famous invention, Nestle retired. In 1877, Nestle’s company sparked a direct rivalry with the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company. Two years later, Nestle merged with Daniel Peter's milk chocolate company.

In 1947, the firm was rebranded Nestlé Alimentana SA. The company began expanding into foreign territories in the 90s by acquiring companies worldwide. In 2005, the company purchased Delta Cream Company. Five years later, the firm purchased the North American frozen pizza operations of Kraft Foods. In 2014, Nestle ventured into skincare research. In 2021, Nestle bought Bountiful Company.
