The Pepsico Story

In the late 19th century, Caleb Bradham, a pharmacist, developed the Pepsi soft drink. In 1898, the coined the name “Pepsi-Cola” and started marketing the drink from his pharmacy. He founded Pepsi-Cola in 1902 and registered the patent the following year. In 1919, the company was incorporated. 4 years later, Craven Holding Corporation purchased the company’s recipe and trademark. In the early 60s, Pepsi-Cola created Diet Pepsi and bought Mountain Dew. in 1965, Pepsi-Co agreed to a merger with Frito-Lay Inc and was renamed PepsiCo. In the period between the late 70s and mid-90s, PepsiCo started acquiring businesses outside packaged food and beverage operations. 

Towards the 21st century, Pepsi Co started large-scale acquisitions beyond snack foods and soft drinks. In 1998, the company acquired Tropicana Products, an Orange Juice company. In 2001, PepsiCo merged with Quaker Oats Company. In 2009, PepsiCo acquired two of the biggest bottling companies in North America. When the purchase was completed, the company created a subsidiary named Pepsi Beverages Company. In mid-2012, PepsiCo marked its venture into dairy production when it established a joint venture with Theo Muller Group. Six years later, the company announced that it would acquire Bare Foods, a veggie and fruit snack maker. In 2022, PepsiCo acquired an interest in Celsius, an energy drink manufacturer.
