The Arup Canada Story

Arup is a British multinational professional services firm founded by Sir Ove Arup in 1946. The firm was established as Ove N. Arup Consulting Engineers. The firm became popular in no time due to some of its high-profile projects, including the Sydney Opera House. In 1970, Arup set out certain principles to guide the firm as he stepped down from actively leading it.

Since the ownership of the firm is structured as a trust. He made his employees the beneficiaries of the firm and they receive a share of the operating profit each year. The idea behind establishing such a firm was Arup’s wartime experiences and thoughts of a progressive mind. He wanted to create something for the betterment of society and produce projects of greater quality.

The best thing about Arup’s vision was that he did not pay attention to acquiring competitive companies to grow. Instead, the firm pursued natural growth and opened new offices at locations with great potential for work. As a result, a new division of the firm was formed in 1963 with the architect Philip Dowson - Arup Associates.

Today, Arup is a prominent name in providing professional services across every aspect of the built environment.
