The IBM Story

IBM was founded in 1911 in Endicott, New York. The founder is Charles R. Flint, a financier and noted trust organizer. He consolidated four companies; Bundy Manufacturing Company, International Time Recording Company, Tabulating Machine Company, and Computing Scale Company of America. At its earliest foundation, IBM was known as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company but was renamed International Business Machines (IBM) in 1924.

Back then, the company manufactured machines for sales and lease. The products were used for commercial scales and industrial time recorders. Along the way of its operations, IBM built various products of computers in continuous development.

In modern development, IBM sold its computer business to Lenovo in 2014 for USD 2,1 billion. It is now a publicly traded company and operates in over 175 countries. The headquarter is located in Armonk, New York.

Culture and Vibes

IBM claims to dedicate itself to innovation that brings success to its clients. It also claims to embrace uniqueness from each individual within the workforce. Many employees stated that there are a lot of career advancement opportunities, the company has a growth mindset and embraces inclusion seriously. They also claimed to have a good and dedicated co-worker.

Recruitment Process

Most employees applied online and some applied through campus recruiting or employee referral. It will begin with a phone screening, then followed by rounds of interviews with HR and the hiring managers or senior staff. Some employees stated that they have a virtual interview. The whole process may take approximately weeks up to two months.

Career Prospects

Eleven departments define roles in IBM; software engineering, sales, consulting, data & analytics, infrastructure & technology, cloud, security, enterprise operations, research, design & UX, and project management. Some roles worth considering are financial analyst, IT specialist, tax analyst, content strategy, media relations, sales representative, developer, and many more. IBM is open to internships and entry-level jobs.

However, IBM welcomes students or talent without a four-year university degree through its apprenticeship program. It is made specifically for those who still need a degree possessing the required knowledge in the department. With the program, IBM will help talents to reinvent their careers.

IBM’s apprenticeship program will allow talent to collaborate with the team member and build their network, receive coaching and mentorship from experts, and then earn a digital credential. IBM’s goal is to close the tech skill gap and prepare new talent to get ready to work in the tech field.

If you join IBM’s internship—from consulting to software development—you will be a part of their projects from the day you enter the company. IBM wants its intern to create an impact during their time in the company. You will have the opportunity to grow your network and build your skillsets to prepare yourself for full-time employment. IBM aims to equip students to get ready to make an impact in their future job.
