The KPMG Canada Story

KPMG, seen today as a world-leading firm, has its Canadian roots running as far back as 1869.

KPMG’s four principal founders were;

  • Klynveld who founded Klynveld Kraayenhof & Co. in 1917
  • Peat, founder of Peat & Co in London
  • Marwick who established Marwick, Mitchell & Co. in 1897 and
  • Geordeler who became the chairman of KPMG

In 1987, KPMG became an international network with the merger of Peat Marwick International (PMI)  and Klynveld Main Gordeler (KMG). Following its entrance into Canada, more than 115 predecessor firms have joined forces to organically grow KPMG Canada.

Culture and Vibes

KPMG embodies professionalism at its peak. KPMG’s culture is grounded in trust and a belief in its employees. They embrace equity and diversity in treating employees giving everyone a platform to become their best selves.

At KPMG there’s a guarantee of collaboration with diverse, passionate, and supremely skilled teams. They place employees at the centre of all they do, consistently investing in endeavours that make working with them worthwhile.

The vibe at KPMG is light and friendly but just as competitive. They offer a great balance of fun and work, as they help employees realize their best selves every day.

Recruitment Process

Placed amongst the top four professional service firms in the world, KPMG always attracts the best talent. They embrace diversity in employment, giving every applicant a good shot at landing a position.

Recruitment for graduates and interns starts with registration on the KPMG recruitment system where tax, audit, and advisory positions are displayed. Applicants can choose from available roles.

After the recruitment registration, applicants are passed through four selection processes.

Information and networking - graduate and internship applicants to KPMG must know what a career at the firm promises. They are required to attend virtual information and networking sessions.

Application submission - KPMG displays open positions on the company’s website. For each position, graduate and internship applicants need to submit a resume, cover letters, and unofficial transcripts. Applicants can only tender one application at a time.

Interview sessions - There are virtual interview sessions with department managers. The interview session helps recruiters narrow down the understanding of applicants’ skill sets. Interview sessions at KPMG are mostly virtual.

Offer of employment - After completing the third selection process, selected applicants are offered employment within KPMG.

Recruited graduates and interns enjoy access to a plethora of career development and productivity tools to set them on a path to exceptional success.

Every aspect of KPMG’s recruitment aligns with its culture of giving everyone a chance to shine and placing them in the perfect position for a headstart in their professional career.

Their decarbonization strategy involves goal setting, managing renewable resources, and reduction in carbon emissions. They also proffer software and data solutions to help businesses understand their carbon emission rate and how to reduce it.

Controversies

In 2016, over 4,000 financial officers lodged two formal complaints against KPMG over professional misconduct. Both complaints were about KPMG’s role in creating offshore tax structures in the Isle of Man.

KPMG responded to these claims as complete “nonsense”, stating they always complied with professional regulations. The Canada Revenue Agency approached around 26 of KPMG’s clients for repayment of their evaded taxes in exchange for amnesty. KPMG already stopped the Isle of Man operation but was still pursued legally.
