The AECOM Story

AECOM's roots go back to 1910. Fifty-six years later, Ashland Oil & Refining Company ventured into highway construction and construction materials by acquiring Warren Brothers. Gradually, Ashland built a reputation as one of the major road constructors in the country, preceding an operational foundation for AECOM. The firm also incorporated petrochemical and chemical operations into its business, and in 1985, there was a management buyout of Ashland Technology. In 1990, this firm was spun-off, leading to the creation of AECOM. This newly created company embarked on an acquisition spree of design, engineering, and planning companies. In 2000, AECOM purchased Metcalf and Eddy. The firm acquired UMA Engineering Limited, a Canadian firm, four years later.

AECOM had its IPO in 2007 on the New York Stock Exchange. The following year, it bought The Services Group, a foremost consulting firm in the U.S. In 2010, AECOM bought Tishman Construction Corporation, strengthening its position in the construction management market. In 2014, the firm purchased ACE International Consultants SL. Later that year, it bought Hunt Construction Group. In late 2020, AECOM sold its power construction operations to CriticalPoint Capital.
